730 + 4.0 AWA, should I take the exam again?

by Ztormrage Tue Jun 03, 2014 3:48 pm

Dear forum readers,

I got my GMAT score this morning: 730 (Q51, V37) + 4.0 AWA. Although, I am not a native speaker, my writing english has been considered good during my university and professional years. That is why I am quite disappointed with the AWA score.

Since my goal is to get acceptance from the top business schools, I am quite concerned that my AWA can cause a problem during my application process. What would you suggest me doing? Should I retake the exam in order to get a higher AWA, or should I focus on my essays rather?

I think you're fine (great job on the test, by the way!). The schools will know that you're not a native speaker, so they will adjust their expectations accordingly. Plus, they will be able to see the quality of your application essays.

You may want to ask an admissions consultant (my area of expertise is the GMAT, not admissions). A lot of firms have free online info sessions or even let you set up a one-on-one phone call for 15 or 30 minutes for free. I like the company MBA Mission and they offer a free 30-minute phone call. Gather up all of your questions and talk to them. (Let me know what they say!)
