a point in the CAT, please help

by eggpain24 Tue Oct 16, 2012 9:06 pm

Spanish guitarist and composer Andres Segovia led the twentieth-century revival of the classical guitar, which was not considered sufficiently prestigious enough to be a concert instrument.
A. Segovia led the twentieth-century revival of the classical guitar, which was not considered sufficiently prestigious enough to be
B. Segovia, who led the twentieth-century revival of the classical guitar, had not been considered prestigious enough to be
C. Segovia, leading the revival of the classical guitar in the twentieth century, not previously considered sufficiently prestigious for
D. Segovia led the twentieth-century revival of the classical guitar, which had not previously been considered prestigious enough to be
E. Segovia had led the revival of the classical guitar in the twentieth century, which was not considered sufficiently prestigious for

I quickly eliminate ABC for various reasons

so I get D and E

after thinking a while, I get E

because it seems to me previously is a time indicator for simple past, so the tense in choice D is wrong

but I later check it out and find that choice E conveys an illogical meaning for mixing up the time sequence and that D clearly outshines E for better and more logical meaning

I just get confused about one point: is " previously" a time indicator for simple past? It seems that I rarely see the "previously" not used with simple past in official example.

can instructors correct in this point and give some more examples to further illustrate this? many thanks!!!

first, be careful bumping questions. every time you do that it puts the question at the absolute end of the queue for us to answer. bumping a question is the most effective way to cause a delay in getting your question answered..

second, "previously" just means something happened in the past, and in fact i assume it would be more likely to indicate past perfect than simple past because it indicates something happened previously to something else..

What do you mean by bumping a question?

bumping a post is what happens anytime someone replies to it; it shows up at the top of the list. but since we answer questions from the bottom up, anytime someone responds to a post that pushes it to the end of our queue. so someone who responds to their post asking when their question will be answered just makes their wait time longer..
