Although Napoleon’s army entered Russia

by rihanna.hayat Tue Sep 10, 2013 10:24 am

Hello Instructors, Since I cannot find a separate discussion for this question, I am posting it as a new topic. Please attach a link if this problem has been discussed earlier.

Although Napoleon’s army entered Russia with far more supplies than they had in their previous campaigns, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.
(A) they had in their previous campaigns,
(B) their previous campaigns had had,
(C) they had for any previous campaign,
(D) in their previous campaigns,
(E) for any previous campaign,

Here I can see that choices a, b, c and d are wrong because of the pronoun error but the use of 'for' in the correct choice is confusing for me. If all choices were not showing the pronoun error I would have guessed (e) as incorrect choice.

Can we rephrase the sentence using 'in':
Although Napoleon’s army entered Russia with far more supplies than it had in its previous campaigns, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.

Please explain the use of 'for' and 'in' here.

Thanks

The reason you probably don't see this on our forums is that this is a question from the blue OG supplement. Questions found only on paid resources can't be shared here. If this is also found in a free resource (GMAT Prep), please post a screenshot and then we can discuss.
