An exceptionally literate people, more Icelanders publish bo

by eggpain24 Sat Aug 23, 2014 1:53 pm

An exceptionally literate people, more Icelanders publish books per capita than do the people of any other nation.
A. more Icelanders publish books per capita than do the people of
B. more Icelandic books are published by Icelanders per capita than by the people of
C. Icelanders publish more books per capita than do the people of
D. Iceland’s per capita publication of books is higher than that by
E. the per capita publication of Icelandic books is higher than that in

this is from Gmat Prep. The OA is C

I just wonder my analysis of choice A

it is wrong for the placement of “more”

we are comparing the “books published per person” in different nations

but in choice A → comparing ”the number of people“ in different nations who published the books

this comparison also render the use of “ per captia” illogical and awkward

please clarify~Thanks!

Hi,
Yes, I believe that in A, we are comparing the number of people who wrote books in Iceland to the number of people who wrote books in any other nation, keeping the books per capita the same for both the groups. Whereas we need to compare the books per capita for both the groups. Also the books per capita doesn't seem illogical in A, since it wants us to know that the books published by the people of both the groups are the same. (Though this is not the intended meaning of the sentence.) Thus C makes the right comparison between the books per capita of Icelanders and the books per capita of people of any other nation.

Choice A seems to be discussing the number of "Icelanders who publish books ... per capita". That just doesn't make any sense.

I don't really understand these formulas. Please write out the specifics of what you're asking.

Thanks.

Step 1 of ALL s.c. problems:
Read normally, as though you were reading a book or magazine. DO NOT think about grammar. Just read like a reader in the real world.

If you do this, you should never have any trouble understanding the intended meaning--regardless of whether the sentence is actually written correctly.

Hi, Ron

in choice B.

I just want to ask

is it the meaning being distorted to a way that suggest " people of any other nation also publish Icelandic books?"

Thank you!

Is more icelanders after comma in A also problematic as compared to icelanders in C

Thanks

yeah, that's a problem, because the opening modifier ("an exceptionally literate people") clearly has to refer to "icelanders" in general.
