Avg data suff problem

by nipukumar Mon Jan 31, 2011 4:06 am

I am not sure if General Math is still open, but have seen recent posts and reply in the forum, hence i am posting my query. This is a data sufficiency problem.

Committee A and Committee B , which have no common members, will combine to form Committee C . Does Committee A have more members than Committee B ?

(1) The average (arithmetic mean) age of the members of Committee A is 25.7 years and the average age of the members of Committee B is 29.3 years.

(2) The average (arithmetic mean) age of the members of Committee C will be 26.6 years.

What is the approach here ?

Hi Jamie,
This one appeared in paper-n-pencil test code 31.

Correct ans is: C (Together)

Thanks,

no of members in Committee A is a
and no of members in Committee B is b
(25.7a + 29.3b)/(a+b )= 26.6

you will get a/b and hence which one is greater .so the ans is C.

The approach should be as below.

Assuming the number of members in both the commitees are same, then the average age of the commitee C would be (29.3 +25.7)/2 = 27.5
Now,taking both the statements together,as the average age of the combined commitee is 26.6 ,commitee A definitely has more members as 26.6< 27.5

Hi, so to clarify, this an official GMAT paper and pencil test?
