AWA score 5 but percentile just 54

Hello!

I am surprised that even after scoring a 5 in the AWA section of actual GMAT, I have got a mere 54 %ile. Can anyone please let me know if this is unusual and shall I contact GMAC for further clarification on this?

No, that's correct. Simply lots of people score 5 and above on the AWA. Have a look at this: https://www.mba.com/global/the-gmat-exa ... .aspx#tab5

It's nothing to be concerned about - a 5 is well inside what business schools count 'good enough' and a higher score would add approximately nothing to your application.
