B Schools in Asia

by connect2dyno Sat Sep 15, 2012 11:42 pm

Hello folks,

I am planning to apply to mid tier B-Schools in Asia namely ISB / NUS / NTU / SMU and INSEAD Singapore (this one is not mid-tier). My profile is,

GMAT score - 720 (VA-93, QA-78, AWA-6)
Work Ex - Project Execution, Operations (Oil&Gas) = 3 years
Employer = GAIL (India) Ltd - a leading Natural Gas transmission utility in Asia
Under grad = BE (hons) Mechanical Engineering from BITS,Pilani - Goa Campus
CGPA = 6.97/10
12th marks = 88.67 / 100
Extra Curriculars = Sports and Event Management
Since I am interested in finance, I have also appeared and cleared 2 levels of CFA exam. Planning to appear for Level 3 in June 2013.
Post MBA - Finance or Consulting

Please help me evaluate my chances for these B-schools (esp INSEAD / NUS / NTU). Outside of India, I am very keen to work in Singapore.

How good are the prospects of an MBA from NUS / NTU for a career in finance?
Also, how does SMU compare with the other mentioned univs. Haven't heard much of it.

I have a very exalted opinion of work and life in Singapore. Can someone tell me how it actually is?

Thanks a ton in advance!

Hello,

Thanks for posting! I think your academic profile is good - despite a slightly low quant score on the GMAT, I think your CFA credentials should help compensate for that. Your undergrad grades are ok, but not great, but not much you can do about that now! I'd say your academics dimension is competitive for these schools, but it's average against the applicant pool.

Your professional experience, however, is very interesting and definitely unique. This is likely where you want to differentiate yourself - hone in on your leadership experience (teamwork, team leadership, taking initiative to improve the firm's business/processes, etc., firm stewardship). If you can demonstrate strong leadership capability and excellent work performance, you'll be in great shape on this dimension.

I didn't see any mention of extracurricular or community leadership/activities in your profile. If you don't have any, that will be a gap in your profile, but it's possible you can overcome it. Think through your personal stories and see if there are any meaningful/compelling ones that demonstrate your character, leadership capability, etc.

To be completely honest, I'm not as in tune with the specifics of SMU versus the other programs. I think you have a shot at the schools on your list, including INSEAD, but I do recommend adding at least one safer program to your list.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to help you answer the question about living/working in Singapore! You may need to try a different board or forum to get that one answered :)

Good luck,
Mili
