"basis for " OR "basis of" ? what is the correct usage ?

by ad.kuldeep Tue Sep 15, 2009 2:51 am

Hi All ,

I've two queries

1.George's personal diary and album formed the basis for his book about the places he had visited.

In the above statement how can we determine whether "basis for" is a correct usage or "basis of " is a correct usage, I saw few sentences where "basis for" is used and a few where "basis of" is used. Shall we use first one or the latter one ?

Please clarify.

In general, X is/was/formed/etc the basis for Y:

The true life of John Chapman formed the basis for the almost mythic tales of Johnny Appleseed.

Some researchers now believe that there is a genetic basis for musical ability.

In general, X on the basis of Y:

Discrimination on the basis of disability is forbidden by law.

Critics of the bill fear that medical care will be rationed on the basis of age.

George’s personal diary and album formed the basis for his book about the places he had visited.

- the basis for his book about the places he had visited.
- the basis for his book regarding the places he had visited.
- the basis of his book about the places he visited.
- the basis of his book about the places which he had visited.
- the basis of his book about the places he had visited.

OA is C - I know A has its tenses wrong but does that mean that formed the basis of is acceptable?

i cannot find this question in our question bank; can you confirm the source of the problem? also, i am not entirely convinced you have correctly identified the right and wrong answers here..
