Closest multiple of 100

by goelmohit2002 Sun Aug 16, 2009 3:13 pm

If 500 is the multiple of 100 that is closest to X and 400 is the multiple of 100 that is closest to Y, which multiple of 100 is closest to X+Y ?
a) X is less than 500.
b) Y is less than 400.

OA after some discussion.

This is my guess :

I translated the problem as such :

450 < X < 550
350 < Y < 450

You can sum it up :

800 < X + Y < 1000

Now add (a) and (b)

450 < X < 500
350 < Y < 400

You can sum it up too :

800 < X + Y < 900

Again isnt enough information. My guess would be E.

Hello goelmohit2002

I have been rather furious to see that you already asked this exact same question last december in another forum as goelmohit2002 :
http://www.beatthegmat.com/closest-mult ... 43171.html
At the time you also got the exact same answer I gave.

All in all the same question has been the subject of multiple posts on various forums, all with answer E :
http://www.beatthegmat.com/number-prope ... 22898.html
http://www.urch.com/forums/gmat-data-su ... 100-a.html
http://www.urch.com/forums/gmat-data-su ... e-out.html
http://www.beatthegmat.com/closest-mult ... 43171.html

I took some time answering you question in honest faith thinking helping you out and you have not been honest. I don't know what game you're playing and unless you issue some apology I will raise the issue with a moderator.

Cheers

Hi Camille,

Probably you have missed the dates....I have posted the same question on beatthegmat as well as Manhattan on the same date itself....

Probably I am missing something here....but really I do not see any problem in discussing a doubt at two different forums. Can you please tell what is the problem in acquiring the best knowledge for a concept that is unknown to a person from any of the sources......?

Manhattan = More reliable then any other forum but a bit slow in getting replies.
BTG = we get very quick replies...but reliability of replies is not that good.

Just in case unknowingly I had hurt any of your sentiments then I am really sorry for that.

Thanks
Mohit

Camille, thanks for taking the time to reply. It is the case that goel posted the problem at BTG, but he did so in August of this year, not December of last year.

Camille also found that this problem has been posted in lots of places - so you may want to try searching for the problem and explanation first before you post. (Or perhaps you did but you wanted to see what we would say.)

As Ben noted above, we cannot reply to any problems unless the author has been cited. I'm sorry we can't, but we have to follow legal rules and give proper credit to the author.
