combined squares and roots problem

by rocket7729 Thu May 31, 2012 12:16 am

Hi,

I have a question on how to solve the following type of problem:

√ ( (large number) ^ 2 + (large number) ^ 2 )

example: √ ( (100,000) ^ 2 + (625,000) ^ 2 )

Is there an easy process to follow to simply this type of problem by easily combining terms and then finally taking the root?

I just made up the numbers in the above example, so if there are better numbers that can be used to show this, let me know. Thanks.

if there are squares that are factors of both numbers, you can factor those out and make things a little easier. other than that, you pretty much just have to do the math.. :)
