* comma with

by yuanfeng.ma Tue Jul 19, 2011 11:48 pm

From Gmat Prep

A Swiss government panel recommended that the country sell about half its gold reserves and this raised fears of other countries that do the same and inundate the market.
A. reserves and this raised fears of other countries that
B. reserves, which, as a result, raised fears of other countries that
C. reserves; as a result, they feared that other countries would
D. reserves, with fears raised that other countries would
E. reserves, raising fears that other countries would

What is the issue with D?
does "comma with" indicate result?

This looks rather weird. Are you sure this is from the GMAT prep test? I just googled it and the only site to show this question is ours.

What is the original answer?

A. reserves and this raised fears of other countries that
B. reserves, which, as a result, raised fears of other countries that
Wordy , Raising would have been better
C. reserves; as a result, they feared that other countries would
D. reserves, with fears raised that other countries would
Not sure with this one.
E. reserves, raising fears that other countries would
Seems to be all correct .

Isn't it ?
What is the OA ?

since jamie doubts that this problem is actually from the GMAT PREP software, i've flagged this thread for deletion.

if someone can post a screenshot of this problem from the actual GMAT PREP software (either here or at postimage.org), then we will keep the thread live. otherwise, we will delete it within about a week.
thanks.

This is a GPREP Exam Pack question indeed. I got in my test today. Don't know how to paste the screenshot.

Between D and E:

D: "with fears raised" doesn't have a clear referent. Who's fears were raised?

E: "raising fears that xxx" correctly shows a consequence of the preceding clause.

Please let me know if my understanding is correct.

Thanks!

ah. sorry, but we can't use problems from the paid exam packs. those are off limits just as the OG is, per the express request of GMAC.
