Consecutive sequences

by sidrasehar Sun Jul 06, 2014 5:25 am

Hi,

I wanted to ask if there was a difference if I were to use 2n+1, 2n+3, 2n+5.. for consecutive odd sequence qns vs. x, x+2, x+4, x+6...

I realized that the latter sequence could have helped speed things up quite a bit for a qn I tried [Quant Review (2nd Ed), pg 70 qn 70], but as I was thinking of the former sequence 2n+1,... I took too long and made tons of careless mistakes.

Thanks!

Those two approaches are essentially equivalent. If they are applied to the same problem, then the value of x will be the same as the value of 2n + 1.

Ideally, you should be able to use both of them. If one of them is awkward for whatever reason, you can just quit and switch to the other one.

More generally, the answer to "Should I use this strategy, or that strategy?" is pretty much always "Both."
