Contradicting Answers

by sumithshah Wed Aug 20, 2008 7:53 am

Hi

I have a general DS question. Lets say we have something like

IS X = 12

a) X=12
b) X=13

( Yes, I know its an idiotic question - but I made it up to highlight a point)

From statement A, we can say Yes for sure
From statement B, we can say NO for sure.

So then the Answer to this questions would be D or E?

Would appreciate a reply.

As far as I know GMAT never provides contradicting answers in the 2 statements. This means that such a situation should never arise.

in yes or no problems, remember that we are only looking for Definite YES or No.
"No" is as good as "Yes" in the problem given!!
if in a statement that gives us both yes and no, then the statement alone is NOT sufficient to answer the questionin your question: IS X = 12

a) X=12
b) X=13

statement 1: x=12, definite yes. statement alone is sufficient to answer the question
statement 2: x=13, definite no. statement alone is sufficient to answer the question.
thus, the answer tho the question is D

this will never happen, so you don't have to worry about it.
if it does happen, then your interpretation of at least one of the statements is definitively wrong, so you should go back and check.
