CR options evaluations

by info123talk Wed Sep 11, 2013 7:12 am

Each bank in the town of La Rinconada has only a single set of locking doors at its entrance. In the town of Inverness, on the other hand, the entrance to nearly all banks are equipped with two sets of locking doors, operated by a mechanism that allows only one set of doors to be open at a time. It is clear, then, that banks in Inverness experience more robbery attempts than do those in La Rinconada, and have thus adopted the extra doors as a security measures.

Which of the follwoing, if true, most weakens the argument above?

a) Last year the number of bank robberies in La Rinconada was almost one-half greater than the corresponding figure for the previous year.
b) Inverness is known for its harsh winters, while the climate of La Rinconada is quite temperate year-round.
c) The mechanism of the double doors used by banks in Inverness allows bank security personnel to lock the doors remotely.
d) Bank robbery attempts are typically unsuccessful, and, even when the robbers do manage to escape with stolen money, the sum is usually quite small.
e) Inverness has almost twice as many police officers per capita as does La Rinconada.

In the above example, right answer is option A. But, my doubt is-
Option C can be evaluate to-- Locking the doors remotely, is a helpful option for the security personnel as it can be termed as easing the process for them & in general, only the security personnel take care of doors in any bank. So, this option can be right if we think in that direction. At the same time, there is a possibility that this mechanism will ease them in securing bank & thus preventing from robbery.

There is a chance of weakening option C but not option A. But, in case option A is not there in the answer choices, then considering rest of the options, C sounds better.

I might sound confusing. But, is it that we need to be 100% sure in this case that the doors were not placed for the security reasons. i.e. there should not be an iota of doubt that the choice can be weaken with other possibility while selecting the answer- in general?

Thanks-

First off, in the future, please include all 5 answer choices for questions, so that others can learn from these questions too.

Second, I think you're confused about what the goal is in this question. Your logic sounds right- if they can lock the double doors remotely, then it seems like they would be safer. But your goal in this question is to WEAKEN the argument that the doors were adopted as an extra safety measure.

Finally, the correct answer here is not A, but rather B. A is also irrelevant to why the banks used double doors. But B gives us an alternative explanation- not to make the banks safer, but because it's cold outside! By having two sets of doors in a public place, you'd be able to reduce the amount of heat lost during cold days when indoors is heated.
