Cylinder Volume

by sean.hilscher Mon Sep 05, 2011 7:28 pm

A closed cylindraical tank contains 36pi cubic feet of water and is filled to half its capacity. When the tank is placed upright on its , the height of the water in the tank is 2 feet. When the tank is placed on its side on level ground, what is the height, in feet, of the surface of the water above the ground?

A. 2
B. 3
C. 4
D. 6
E. 9

When I worked on this problem I recognized right away that they were looking for the radius. I set up the following equation

36 = pi (r squared) x Height

I designated the height as 2, but the Strat Guide says its 4. Why?

You said this question is from Strategic guide, right? Please post the question in the correct section.

Final height should be 3 (radius). I would answer once you moved the question to correct section.

I am pretty sure that this Official Guide 12th Edition question (q5, pg. 20) is erroneous. I believe that it ought to read "the height of the water in the tank is 4 feet" (i.e., not 2). Ironically, it appears that earlier printings of this book stated the problem correctly, but that some confusion regarding the question led the publisher to change it to the current incorrect form. See errata details at
http://media.wiley.com/product_ancillary/48/04704497/DOWNLOAD/Errata.pdf).

Can anyone else confirm this error?

Unfortunately this is a question from the Official Guide and thus it is a banned source for this forum, by request of the GMAC; please see our forum rules for more information. read-before-you-post-general-math-folder-guidelines-t2717.html
