Data Suff question

by Guest Wed Sep 26, 2007 4:52 pm

Hi,

Does anyone have any ideas on this one?

What is the hundredths digit of the decimal z?
1) The tenths digit of 100z is 2.
2) The units digit of 1000z is 2.

z= dot d1 d2 d3 and we need to find d2.

[1] 100z = d1 d2 dot d3 , tenths digits means d3. Not suffecient
[1] 1000z= d1 d2 d3 dot d4, units digit meas d3. Not suffeciet

The solution here is good, although it's a bit difficult to read (because of the limitations of the forum - no fault of the poster's).

Basically, in words the idea is this: Just notice the way in which the decimal point shifts when you multiply 'z' by different powers of 10. Multiplying by 10 moves the decimal over by one spot; by 100, two spots; by 1000, three spots; and so on. Then, just figure out which of the original digits is being affected.
