Data Sufficiency and Quadratics

by kapoor.sam Fri Aug 17, 2012 10:41 pm

Hi, I am confused on Problem 10 in Chapter 5 of Strategy Guide in Algebra (Quadratic Equations). The problem asks What is x?
By combining both statements and applying quadratic formula we arrive at values of x being either -8 or 4. i would expect the correct answer to be C but it turns out to be E. Does this mean that since there are 2 possible values for x we cannot say what is the value of x? Mostly all quadratics will have 2 values so I'm bit confused here.

the information is only sufficient if it gives EXACTLY ONE answer to the problem. since you have two answers, that is not sufficient..
