distance between a and b CAT 2 #11

by sneha_patel60 Sun Mar 11, 2012 6:02 pm

What is the distance between a and b on the number line?

(1) |a| - |b| = 6
(2) ab > 0

I thought statement 1 is suff because lets consider the following scenarios
1) a = 7 b = 1..a-b= 6
2) a= -7 b= 1...abs a=7 abs b= 1..so still 7-1 = 6
3) a=7 b=-1...abs a=7 abs b= 1..so still 7-1 = 6
4) a= -7 b= -7 abs a= 7 abs b= 1..so still 7-1= 6

isnt the distance between them always 6?

Hey Sneha,
Distance on numberline between two numbers "a" and "b" is |a-b| and not |a|-|b|. Now the correct answer should make sense to you.
