Do not have patience/time for RC specific questions

by rahul.manhat Sun Jul 07, 2013 9:05 pm

Hi Stacey/Instructors,

I have taken 5 MGMATs and the results have moved around quite a bit due to Verbal section.
I am quite ok at SC and need to improve on CR and RC questions.
On RC questions, I have noticed that I get almost all general questions correct but most of the specific questions are wrong.
I do end up spending more time on CR question early on and run out of time/patience on RC questions.
Is there a way to improve my RC speed on specific questions.
Please advise.

Hmm, two issues: time and patience.

For time - are you running out of time towards the end of the section? That means you're spending too much time on some things earlier in the section. CR? Then part of the solution is getting better (more efficient) at CR.

Use the below to analyze your most recent MGMAT CAT(s):

Then come back here and tell us the results of your analysis (including what's going on with that RC timing) and what you think you should do based on that analysis. We'll tell you whether we agree and advise you further. (Note: do share an analysis with us, not just the raw data. Part of getting better is developing your ability to analyze your results - figure out what they mean and what you think you should do about them!)

On the patience issue - for questions that you want to get right / think you can get right, you do obviously have to stick with it (while staying in a reasonable timeframe). If you're too impatient to go back into the passage to check for proof, example, then you're going to make a lot of mistakes.

But is this patience issue happening all the time? Or is it happening more when you're mentally fatigued - toward the end of a CAT or the end of a study session? That reduction in patience is a common signal of mental fatigue, so perhaps that's what's happening?

Let me know what you think. Either way, you need to learn to be more systematic: have a set process that doesn't change, so you aren't as likely to let things slide. If there is also a mental fatigue issue, then we also have to address that.

For RC, look at these first:

And finally (the below is a series of 3 articles all on the same passage):

For CR, use this (it's got everything!):
