DS-The movie problem-GMAT Prep

by lmmille2 Wed Feb 03, 2010 12:21 pm

A certain movie depicted product A in 21 scenes, B in 7 scenes, C in 4 scenes, and D in 3 scenes.The four product manufacturers paid amounts proportional to the number of scenes in which their product was depicted in the movie. If each manufacturer paid x dollars per scene, how much did the manufacturer of product D pay for this advertising?

1) Manufacturers of products A and B together paid a total of $560,000 for this advertising.
2) The manufacturer of product B paid $60,000 more for this advertising than the manufacturer of product C paid.

The answer to me seems to be pretty straightforward. I shall perhaps not go into calculations for this!
choice a) because as per 1 A+B varies as D. and we do have an absolute value of A+B
however as per 2, B depends on C and the absolute value of nither B or C is available.

Answer is D: each choice is enough to answer the question.

1) Manufacturers of products A and B together paid a total of $560,000 for this advertising.
A should have paid 21x, B 7x, C 4x and D 3x.
A+B=21x + 7x = 28x = 560,000 => x = 20000 => D paid 3x = 60000
2) The manufacturer of product B paid $60,000 more for this advertising than the manufacturer of product C paid.
A should have paid 21x, B 7x, C 4x and D 3x.
B-C = 7x - 4x = 3x = 60000
D = 3x = 60000
So, each is enough

the solution above is very nice.

A should have paid 21x, B 7x, C 4x and D 3x.

this right here is the key to the problem.

in fact, there are two very valuable takeaways right here:

takeaway #1
IF THE PROBLEM SAYS "SAME PROPORTION", THAT MEANS THAT YOU ARE BEING GIVEN A RATIO.

takeaway #2
IF YOU NEED TO CREATE VARIABLES FROM A RATIO, USE ONE VARIABLE TIMES THE NUMBERS IN THE RATIO.

here the ratios 21:7:4:3, so you use 21x, 7x, 4x, and 3x.

regarding this:

The answer to me seems to be pretty straightforward. I shall perhaps not go into calculations for this!

first of all, there's no call for posting things like this. why would you bother posting just to say that a question is "straightforward", and that you are not going to answer it?
the purpose of posting is to post answers and responses, not to declare that you are above doing so.

perhaps the most ironic part, though, is that it seems that every time someone posts something like this, they wind up subsequently posting the wrong answer. this is no exception: the answer is not (a), it's actually (d).
