GMAC paper test #14

Can someone help me with this question-

if 5x=6y and xy does not equal 0, what is the ratio of 1/5(x) to 1/6(y)?

a) 25/6
b) 36/25
c) 6/5
d)5/6
e)25/36

5x = 6y so x = (6/5)y

1/5(x) / (1/6)y = (x/5) * (6/y) = (6/5)*y*(1/5)*(6/y) = 36/25

x=6y/5 (x/5)/(y/6) ---> ((6y/5)/5)/(y/6) ----> (6y/25)/(y/6)---> cancel y's, *6's ---> 36/25.

The solutions posted here are essentially perfect (although a bit difficult to read, because these forums aren't ideal for writing rational expressions).

As an additional suggestion, you can pick numbers for x and y, satisfying the condition that 5x = 6y. Perhaps the first numbers to come to mind would be x = 6 and y = 5 (these would make both sides = 5 times 6).

Using those numbers, we want the ratio of 6/5 to 5/6. That ratio is 6/5 divided by 5/6, which is 6/5 times 6/5, which is 36/25.
