GMAT Performance

by Guest Tue Jun 05, 2007 9:23 am

How does a poor GMAT (640; high verbal - 95%, low quant- 50%) weight against a high GPA (3.7) from an Ivy League school with regard to academic aptitude? Also if I received an A in accounting and passed a Pass/Fail Calculus course while in college - how is this measured versus a low GMAT Quant Score. I've also worked in financial services - investment bank, now research firm- for the last three years. Clearly there are applicants with strong stats across the board.

Also are there particularly schools that emphasize a strong verbal score - as most seem to focus on the quant. I plan to take the test again, but am curious.

Thanks.

There are no schools really that focus on verbal more than quant.

Adcoms look more closely at verbal scores if you're an international student or domestic techie (engineer, scientist, or any kind of analytical background). Conversely, they'll look more closely at quant scores for people who don't have an extensive quant background (i.e. lib arts majors).

What matters most though is the composite score.

In your case, I would retake it if you can. If you haven't already, you should sign up for a test prep service (ahem, like this site). At 640, you are really skating the bottom of the safe range. The middle 80% at all top schools is around 660 - 760, so even with your strong background, you should re-take it.

A high GMAT score won't get you in, but a low one can keep you out. Especially if you're not a non-traditional candidate (i.e. nonprofit, teacher, pro athlete, military, etc.).

Good luck

My Chances for UCLA-FEMBA

by GMAT 660 Mon Jun 25, 2007 11:37 pm

I scored 660 (Q: 48 V:33) in GMAT. What are my chances of getting in FEMBA program at UCLA? I've a master's degree in biology, 2yrs work ex and GPA 3.9. Am I in the safe zone or should consider retaking?
