GMAT PREP: CR "buying a new car"

by sana.noor Sun Dec 15, 2013 2:53 pm

i have a question here. i wana know why C isn't the answer. as per Ron's explanation in one of his video:
The fact is: "people are driving old car"
Choice C is just about this fact so it doesn't weaken the manufacturers' prediction.
But i still didn't get this.
Manufacturer claim: people isnt buying a new car because of poor economy; however, the fact is that people have old cars and upkeep of these cost more. so isnt C right? its not the poor economy that forced people to put off buying new cars. Their must be something else.

In Morigia the average age of cars that are still in use has historically been seven years, but now it is nearly nine years. Car manufacturers claim that the current poor economy has forced people to put off buying new cars, and thus when the economy improves, the average age of cars will return to former levels.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously calls into question the car manufacturers' prediction?
(A) Fewer cars per year are now being manufactured in Morigia than were being manufactured there five years ago.
(B) When the threat of job loss is particularly strong, people are reluctant to commit themselves to expensive purchases.
(C) The older a car is, the greater the amount of upkeep it requires.
(D) The air-pollution control devices now being used in cars manufactured in Morigia cost less than those that were used seven years ago.
(E) Most people in Morigia now believe that replacing an old car with a new one has very undesirable ecological consequences.

Two things.

1/
You're not paying attention to the question.
The question asks you to give a reason to doubt the manufacturers' prediction. The prediction is "the average age of cars will return to xxxx levels".

When you write this ...

... you're not addressing the issue.
We're not trying to falsify the hypothesis about why cars are currently older. We're concerned only with the prediction.

"Older cars require more upkeep" is exactly the opposite of how you're representing it.
"Older cars require more upkeep" would be a reason why people would buy newer cars sooner! If it's merely an economic decision, then, the more expensive it is to maintain an old car, the sooner it makes sense to get rid of it and buy a new one. (By contrast, if maintenance of old cars were super cheap, then there would be a strong economic disincentive to acquiring a new car.)

Finally, please read the forum rules.

In particular, please take note of how threads must be titled.
"Help!" is not an acceptable title. You must title the thread according to the first few words of the problem.

Time to be the bad guy here for a sec: If you don't follow these rules in the future, those threads may be deleted.

Thanks.
