“Motorcycle X has been manufactured in the United States for over 70 years. Although one foreign company has copied the motorcycle and is selling it for less, the company has failed to attract motorcycle X customers - some say because its products lacks the exceptionally loud noise made by motorcycle X. But there must be some other explanation. After all, foreign cars tend to be quieter than similar American-made cars, but they sell at least as well. Also, television advertisements for motorcycle X highlight its durability and sleek lines, not its noisiness and the ads typically have voice-overs or rock music rather than engine roar on the sound track.”

The argument states that even though a foreign company that has copied the motorcycle design from the american made motorcycle X is selling it for less, the company has failed to attract motorcycle X customers. The argument based its assumptions on various factors that may have caused the failure of the company. These factors are not well reasoned , and based on the evidence , the argument is not a valid one.

The primary issue with the argument is that it is completely denying that the cause of the problem can be noisiness that is missing from the motorcycle. The argument states that some are saying noise is the reason why less number of motorcycles are sold, whereas it fails to provide any proof of how many has been surveyed for this claim. With this we may not have a exact number to the people who have a view that noise may be the issue.Given the number, say 10 of 100 we may neglect the claim. But if 90 people believes that noise is the reason. This possibly is the factor causing the decline.Provided with the exact number of people examined, we could have our main conclusion.

The secondary issue is argument wrongly compares the American made cars and American made motorcycles.By stating that quieter american made cars are sold no less in foreign countries than in america , argument assumes that american made motorcycles if been quieter would have sold no less by the foreign company.Whereas, selling a car and a motorcycle are completely different scenarios which are based on different parameters.Given a reason, for example, by having some statistics between the american made cars and the motorcycles ,we may have a well reasoned argument.

Additionally , the argument wrongly assumes that if the advertisements for motorcycles X highlight its durability and sleek lines, not its noisiness, these are the parameters on which a customer purchases a motorcycle.Without giving any support or proof to its claim , it states that noise may not be the reason. It continues on a questionable assumption that if the soundtrack used by the ads is not engine roar but rock music ,customer buys on the basis of soundtrack.soundtrack. In fact, it may be possible that soundtrack has no relation with the sale of motorcycle. It may be used to make the customer watch the ad.Without having some strong reasons for its claims, we may not end up to the main conclusion.

Finally,if the argument had all these factors discussed above, it would have been a substantiated argument.Given the number of people saying that noise is the factor we could say that majority agrees and this is the conclusion. If the statement that american made cars are sold no less if not provided with noisiness could be used to support that noise in motorcycle is not required,we could have agreed with the reasoning provided. And given the link between ads and the number of motorcycles sold,we could get the valid proof or support for our main conclusion.
