hi,instructors,
I still have some problems about this question :
A.Originally, I thought the problem is the pronoun ,but I saw your answers above ,and i know they are right in A . I do not know what is wrong in A ?could you explain it ?
B.The problem in B is the tense problem ,we should use “would collapsed” . Am I right ?
C.I thought “would have to be collapsing” is wrong
D.Correct
E.Tense problem the same as B . Am I right?

the actual error in choice A is the redundancy created by 'instead'. (Were it not for xxxx already implies that we're discussing 'what would happen instead'.)

...and i think you may have misread my post (directly before yours).
as i wrote in that post, you CAN eliminate A on the grounds of 'pronoun before noun'.

even though 'pronoun before noun' is not technically an error, it's still objectively inferior to 'noun before pronoun'.
in any 'beauty contest' with an objective winner and an objective loser, the loser can be eliminated.

the tense issue is discussed exhaustively on page two of this thread.
