GMAT score,690(Q48, V36) need to know how good the score is.

Hi,

I wrote my GMAT yesterday. Managed to get a 690, a bit disappointed with the score though as I expected something which is 700+.

Work ex: 2.7 years in IT.
GPA: 3.92/4.

I have been doing a role of team member till now. For my co-curricular, I have been engaged with organizing a national level event for specially abled people in India. That gave me a great experience for my life. Other than that, I teach for an NGO.

I am looking for a full time MBA from top 20 colleges in the FT listing for 2012. I am not sure if a score of 690 is enough for a candidate of my profile.

Could you please help me with this ?

Hi! Given your background, you might want to consider to take the GMAT again. You will be competing against other applicants coming from the IT industry and from your demographic that will be scoring well into the mid-700s. Otherwise, I like your experience working with developmentally challenged individuals. That is a strong extra-curricular. As for your professional experiences, make sure you highlight your accomplishments not responsibilities at work.

Hi,

Got the same score. Screwed up a little in verbal. Used to get much higher in mocks.

Anyways Here's is my brief profile:
GMAT: 690
Education: Electronics engineer (from UK). approx 3.7-3.8 GPA.
Experience: 4 years of handling my family business. In general managerial roles. Everything from production to sales.

What would be your take on the rank/league of business schools that I can realistically look at getting into?

Hello Rohan,

I think a lot of the answer to that question depends on the success of your family business. How large is it, how big of a role do you play? The fact that you've transitioned into a business role from a technical background is really good. Your GMAT score is decent - would have been nice to break the 700 mark, but you can still get into a good school with that score. I would suggest reaching for programs like Michigan Ross and Duke and targeting UCLA, Darden types. I'd add some safety programs like USC or Georgetown or something like that - depending on what you're looking for.
