Idioms

by ellen_matchey Thu Oct 01, 2009 3:38 pm

Are these expressions correct idioms? (seems like no to me, but i'm not sure):

1. ...not so much X as to Y
2. ...same as X as to Y

Also, are both of these correct?
just as X so too Y vs. just as X so Y
not only X but also Y vs. not only X but Y

thanks in advance,
E

those look ugly to me; i'm inclined to agree with you. however, to be 100% sure, i'd have to see the original source from which you got these.

as standalone idioms those are definitely wrong. however, there's a slight chance that you're misappropriating (or forgetting) words that belong to other sub-constructions.
for instance, if you had "not so much to X as to Y", that could be a properly parallel structure.

the ones on the second line are definitely both correct; the second one on the first line ("just as X so Y") is also definitely correct.
the first one seems a bit wordy to me, but it could be ok in the right context.
