Important math..

Q: Each of the numbers w,x,y and z has a value of either 0 or 1. Then what is the value of w+x+y+z?

1. w/2 + x/4 + y/8 + z/16 = 11/16

2. w/3 + x/9 + y/27 + z/81 = 31/81

a) 1 alone sufficient
b) 2 alone sufficient
c) Both together sufficient
d) Each alone sufficient
e) Neither of the two sufficient


Need help in solving this out.. tried but couldn't reach to the end.

Answer is D

How far did you get on this question, and what part(s) of the solution didn’t make sense to you? For that matter, where did this problem come from?
