by sandeep.19+man Thu Aug 26, 2010 4:31 am

In Hungary, as in much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women work, many of which are in middle management and light industry.

A. as in much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women work, many of which are in
B. as with much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women works, many in
C. as in much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women work, many of them in
D. like much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women works, and many are
E. like much of Eastern Europe, an overwhelming proportion of women work, many are in

OA : C (highlight)

Questions:

    1. C says - proportion of women work, many of them in
When we substitute "women" in place of them we get
many of the women in middle management and light industry.
    How can this make sense?

    2. If we were to modify A as : an overwhelming proportion of women have jobs, many of which are in. Wouldnt A be correct? Also, many of which will operate in the same way as which, right?

1. The appropriate substitution would be "these women" rather than "the women", but yes it makes sense either way. i think the thing that makes the substituted version sound awkward is that "in middle management" almost looks like it modifies "women" when it really modifies "work"..

2. Yes and yes..

I wanna confirm whether first answer in 2 should be "yes"
as I think, if the immdietely preceding noun of which is "jobs", then "many of which in...." means "many of the jobs are in middle management and light industry" ,

can "Job" in "middle management" ? well, I call a native ear for help! :-)

Thank you!

yes, jobs can be in middle management.

similarly, "women in engineering" and "jobs in engineering" are both legitimate.

hi --

first, read this thread, which almost certainly answers your question:
in-hungary-as-in-much-of-eastern-europe-t5864.html

second -- if you still have questions after reading all 29 posts in that thread, please ask at least one specific question about the problem. (in other words, don't just post "explain this problem"; you actually have to ask about something in the problem.)
