Inequalities DS

by Milanproda1 Wed May 25, 2011 6:45 pm

Is x>y?

1- x-y>0

My question is: Can I safely add the y to the other side of the equation?

Also, if x=3 and y=2, then (3-2)>0

If x=2 and y=3, then (2-(-3))=5, which is greater than 0?

Please tell me where I am wrong,

Sorry for the trouble again,

Milan

You can safely add y to the other side of the equation. Thus, statement 1 tells us that x>y.

You could not use x=2 and y=3 because these numbers do not conform to the information given in statement 1. Remember, since the statements are ALWAYS true, we can only use numbers that fit the statements.
