Inequality/AV Question

by kebabia_josh Wed Mar 07, 2012 1:33 am

Hi,

I have a question directly related to Chapter 8, Drill 11, #55 in the foundations of math guide. The problem is:

3|5x/3-7|< 2x/3+18

I'm pretty sure the first step is to divide both sides by 3, but using what's in the answer section isn't making sense to me. Am I correct about dividing both sides by three, and if so, how should I go about doing it?

The answer is probably simple. It's getting late and I'm pretty tired, haha. Thanks!

Absolutely! Very good! Yes, divide both sides by 3 to isolate the absolute value expression by itself. I'm sure you already realize that we obtain |5x/3-7| on the left once we divide by 3. Let's turn our attention to the right.

Divide each term by 3. We can do that by multiplying each term by 1/3.
2x/3 * 1/3 = 2x/9
18 * 1/3 = 6

Thus, the right becomes 2x/9 + 6.

Our new equation is |5x/3-7|< 2x/9 + 6.

Hope this helps! :-)

Hi,

Just a suggestion. It would be great in case you could post the whole question so that all readers could understand it.

Thanks.

Hi Krishnan,
Yes, we normally advise that people do that. In this case this problem is a drill, so this may be all there is.
