INFERENCE Questions RC

by nitinr517 Mon Jul 28, 2014 10:30 pm

I just took my first mock GMATPrep online test.(of the two provided in mba.com)

Breakup:
Quant 50 (which is prety ok..and will improve eventually with practice)
Verbal 27

SC (4 incorrect, 3 of which were related to idioms)
CR (4 incorrect, haven't analyzed it yet..)

RC (8 incorrect, 2 purpose of the paragraph questions, 3 INFERENCE and the rest details questions..)!
I felt the RCs went quite well but ended up screwing it.

Time management doesn't seem to be much of a problem because i was left with 2-3 minutes spare time having had completed the verbal section. My approach towards RCs is to read the comprehension thoroughly first, make little notes and i don't really wish to change the approach as it suits me.
I plan to buy The Reading Comprehension Guide and follow it religiously.
What apart from it should i DO or READ to better the RC.(Like the GMAT RCs are crammed up with much more information in the same space as compared to journals such as Economist etc.) What exactly should i read.
Strategy wise and practice wise?
I plan to take my GMAT within 2 months but can easily devote around 5-6 hours a day studying so any amount of hard work is fine with me.

Also, the inference questions (and its subtype) do tend to become prety confusing at times, with more than one questions appearing to be the correct ones..

an example, once i faced:

A passage was given and an inference question was asked.I eliminated a few options but got stuck the two mentioned below..

a) the meaning of the scientific jargon correctly matched an option.(also stated in the passage)
b) the inference made correct sense(not beyond the scope of the passage)

I was in a fix, and went ahead with a guess.
Isn't there a more definitive way or a fixed procedure to tackle every inference question.

Because the inference section comprises a lot of questions & I don't really wish to follow my instincts most of the times. :(

Quant 50 is almost perfect! The highest score is 51. Nice job. :)

Use the article below to analyze your exam more thoroughly. In particular, just because you finish the sections on time doesn't mean you don't have timing problems - most people have timing problems anyway. Check it out:

If you are unhappy with your results but don't want to change your approach...then there may not be a lot I can do to help you get better. I'm not saying that you must change that particular part of your approach, but at least consider the idea as you study and figure out why you're struggling with RC.

Here is a set of resources for RC:
https://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/inde ... rehension/

The above uses the same general strategies as our RC guide for the various question types, but the discussions on reading reflect a more up-to-date view (and will be incorporated in future versions of the book, when the time comes). There are inference resources in there as well.

My favorite sources for GMAT-like reading from non-GMAT sources are:
http://magazine.uchicago.edu/
http://harvardmagazine.com/
http://sciam.com/

The last is often not as dense as GMAT science passages, but it's still a good proxy if you're having issues with science stuff.
