Is |a| > |b|?

The following is a data sufficiency question which i came across in the study material provided by Jamboree (a GMAT coaching institute).

Q. Is |a| > |b|?
1. b < -a

2. a < 0

The correct answer is that none of the statements alone or together is sufficient to answer the question, but I believe the 1st statement is sufficient. Please help on the solution.

Please give some specifics about your own understanding of this problem.
What do you understand? What don't you understand? What did you already try to do with the statements?

(Presumably, the problem comes with some sort of answer key. So, if you don't post any commentary at all about your own understanding or trouble spots, the best possible response is "Check out the answer key.")

The answer given in their answer key is correct. Even if you have both statements, the answer to the question could still be either yes or no.
