Is |x| < 1?

The following is a data sufficiency question which i came across in the study material provided by Jamboree (a GMAT coaching institute).

Q. Is |x| < 1?
1. |x+1| = 2|x-1|
2. |x-3|>0

The correct answer is that both the statements together are sufficient to answer the question, but I believe each of the statements is sufficient. Please help on the solution.

Please give some specifics about your own understanding of this problem.
What do you understand? What don't you understand? What did you already try to do with the statements?

(Presumably, the problem comes with some sort of answer key. So, if you don't post any commentary at all about your own understanding or trouble spots, the best possible response is "Check out the answer key.")

The solution should be C (need both together).
