Is y<2x?

by rakeshd347 Sun May 19, 2013 5:56 am

Hi Everyone

Please help me understand this DS question.

Is Y<2X?

1) Y/4<X/2

2) (Y-2x)/3<0

I thought the answer is A but the correct answer to this question is D.
The source of the question is Gmat prep software.

I am stuck with this that if Y-2X<3 we can say that Y<2X+2
But we can't say that Y<2x.
I tried with the number X=1 Y=2. and then X=2 and Y=1 then it yields different answer so I thought the answer is A.

Please help me with this.

Thanks

Think you are doing something wrong with your calculations.

(y-2x)/3 < 0 does not equal (y-2x) < 3

(y-2x)/3 < 0 simply equals y - 2x < 0 because you can multiply both sides of the equation by 3.

For Statement
2) (Y-2x)/3<0

You are given L.H.S is less than 0. Since 3 itself is +ve, the numerator (Y-2X) must be less than 0

=> Y-2X < 0
=> Y < 2X -- Sufficient
