Low scores in mocks! Please advise

by surbhi.87 Sun Apr 08, 2012 10:13 am

Hello,

I'll be taking the test on May, 16th.
Have been studying quite rigorously for a couple of weeks now, and have given 2 MGMAT CAT mocks(1 each weekend).

MGMAT mock1 : Q-43 ; V-30. Total: 600
1 week later,
MGMAT mock2: Q-42 ; V-32. Total 600

I've always felt that English is my strength (and quant my weakness) but the scores talk otherwise, may be i got overconfident while taking the verbal section.

When i sat to review my tests, i got the right answer for almost 50% of the questions that i did wrong "during" the test (esp. in the verbal section).

Please advise how to analyse and improve my score. My aim is to score 720+ in the real exam.

I want to add that i took both the tests in 100% exam conditions(yes wrote the essays too ).

With the first mock i was too tired and bored by the middle of the quant section so rushed through the rest of the test :( In the second mock i got bored/tired/sleepy by the middle of the verbal section.
Two biggest problems i think i need to tackle are stamina and concentration!

Thanks,
Surbhi

Hi Surbhi,
Thanks for your post! First things first: have you read this article on analyzing your test results? Take a look at this and perform the analysis: http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2009/09/ ... tice-tests It's hard to know how to advise you until we know much more about what types of problems you are missing, their difficulty level, whether you are going too fast or slow, and so forth. This is a really important starting point, so please read and then post again.

I don't want to discourage you, but a month is not very much time to make a leap from 600 to 720. Most students would need to study two to three months or more to have a chance at that improvement. However, you can work as much as you can in this time frame and see what happens, and then you can always take the test again.

Finally, you mentioned not doing as well as you should because you got "tired and bored" during the test. Please know that a 720 is an extremely elite score. You are competing with very high caliber people to get that score, and a 720 indicates that out of 100 GMAT test takers you are in the top 5-6 scorers. Frankly, if you really want a 720 (or any good score) you don't have the option to not do well because you are bored. You have to give 100% effort, concentration, and intensity, because trust me, your competition is doing just that. You won't have a prayer of getting the 720 unless you give it all you've got, and if you find yourself getting bored remind yourself that this is your life! The score on this test will have a significant impact on what school you can attend . . . you have to just rise to the occasion if you find yourself getting bored.

Okay, sermon over. We look forward to seeing the results of your analysis.

Best wishes,
Jamie Nelson
