by josh Wed Nov 12, 2008 10:27 pm

88. Many people suggest to bring down audiocassette prices to reduce the incidence of music piracy, others advocate strong legal action against the offenders, and still others would like to convince people not to buy pirated cassettes

1. to bring down audiocassette prices to reduce the incidence of music piracy, others advocate strong legal action against the offenders,

2. bringing down audiocassette prices to reduce the incidents of music piracy, others are advocating strong legal action against offenders,

3. bringing down audiocassette prices to reduce the incidence of music piracy, others advocate strong legal action against offenders,

4. audiocassette prices to be brought down to reduce incidence of music piracy, others advocate that strong legal action must be taken against offenders,

5. audiocassette prices to be brought down to reduce incidence of music piracy, others advocate that strong legal action to be taken against offenders,

I will give the OA once I get correct answer.

Tricky, but let me give it a shot. Not sure though

1. 'Many people suggest to...'. Wrong, because the 'to' after 'suggest' is a little awkward.
2. 'Many people suggest...., others are advocating....'. Wrong, because not parallel.
3. Correct
4. 'Many people suggest audiocassette prices to be brought down...' Wrong, because seems to non-sensically suggest that people are making a suggestion to audio-cassette prices. Also, in 'others advocate that strong legal action must be taken against offenders... ', the word 'must' is not required.
5. 'Many people suggest audiocassette prices to be brought down...' Wrong, because seems to non-sensically suggest that people are making a suggestion to audio-cassette prices. Also, in 'others advocate that strong legal action to be taken against offenders... ', the word 'to' is not required.

My own doubt in this sentence : the part of the sentence beginning from 'others advocate' - shouldn't it be separated by a semi colon. Or atleast, there should be a connector like 'while'. How does a comma suffice in this case ?

I chose A.

A do, B do, and C do.

suggest, advocate, and...convince

looks paralle.

is this really a question from the GMATPREP software? i mean, it's about ... audiocassettes. i haven't seen an audiocassette in years; it seems unlikely that such a question would appear on GMATPREP in the present tense.

among the choices given here, (c) is best:

* "suggest to bring down..." and "suggest prices to be brought down" are unidiomatic.
as with all idiomatic usage, this is not based on rational rules of any sort; you're just supposed to know it.
that narrows the choices to (b) and (c).

* between those two, (c) has better parallelism, as "advocate" is parallel to "suggest".
notice that the third verb ("would like") is, annoyingly enough, nonparallel to the other two.
