Math OG PS #20

by swbright Wed May 27, 2009 3:50 am

Of the five coordinates associated with points A, B, C, D, and E on the number line above, which has the greatest absolute value?

The answer is (A) -2.

I do not understand why answer choice (E) 2, has less of an absolute value than -2. Both are equal distances from 0 on the number line. Please explain how the absolute values of 2 and -2 are any different.

This is a misprint in your book. In my copy, the arrow pointing to "E" points to about 1.8. A number of copies have this misprint.

Yeah, this one drives a lot of people nuts. The question is now #22 in the 12th edition - let's hope the printing errors have been resolved!
