math problem from MCATs

by saurabh2610 Sat May 18, 2013 8:52 am

Hey can you please help me with this question?
Is the number x positive?
(1) On the number line, 0 is closer to x - 1 than to x.
(2) On the number line, 0 is closer to x than to x + 1.

(A)Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
(B)Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
(C)Both statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER one ALONE is sufficient.
(D)EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
(E)Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

I answered (D), but they say answer is (A).
Kindly help.

How could D be the answer.

A: Suppose X=1.2 and (X-1): 0.2 (near to zero) So X is positive.
Suppose X=0.8 and X-1= -0.2 (near to zero) X is negative.

Please Justify.

Hi --
Please don't just post a question with no commentary. These questions come with answer keys, so, if you don't ask something about the question, then the only meaningful answer we can give you is, "Go look at the answer key."

If you have already looked at the answer key, and there is still something specific that you don't understand, then, please post one or more specific questions about this problem.

thanks.
