mean of a set

by ghandour.raya Thu Mar 27, 2014 10:55 am

in some exercises, the mean of a set is (first number + last number)/2
Does the set have to be a set of consecutive numbers only?
or could it be any set of numbers as long as they are ascending?

Hi there,
It needs to be an evenly spaced set. Consider the following set:

1, 2, 9

This set is ascending. If I add the numbers and divide by 3, the actual mean is 4. However, if I only averaged the first and last numbers, I would get a mean of 5.

Please let us know if you have more questions! :-)
