MGMAT Advanced GMAT Quant Guide, 5-ed, p.106

by ivanushk Thu Jan 03, 2013 3:05 pm

Hi guys - my first post here.

Please refer to the Try-it #4-9 (MGMAT Advanced GMAT Quant Guide, 5-ed, p.106). S1 of this problem states a^2 = b^2 (in my newly purchased book anyway) but further explanation goes for, seemingly, a=b^2 because it says b^2 must be positive and hence a is positive. Please let me know if there are misprints in the problem and whether I should indeed read S1 as a=b^2 and follow the explanation provided in the book or whether I am missing something in the way it is explained (I do not see how a must be positive if a^2 = b^2).

On another note, please let me know if this problem has been discussed elsewhere in the forum, the search would not let me search for this type of problem. Or, it would be quite helpful if anyone could point out as to the best way to enter this type of problem in the search engine.

Thanks much,
tim

my version says a = b^2, and it looks like that's the correct rendering of the problem..

Great, thanks - good to know. It is strange, if you have 5ed also, to have this misprint on mine. Anyhow, hope it is the only problem I'll encounter with this book.

you can double check on other such questions at http://www.manhattangmat.com/errata.cfm. at this link you can also submit new errors if you find them. PLEASE confirm any new errors with us here on the forum first though, as we don't want to make extra work for the people handling these submissions if there aren't actual errors..
