MGMAT Guide 3 Page 35

by THANU.KG Thu Jul 12, 2012 8:52 pm

Hi,

can you please help me understand the problems 14 and 15 on Page 35 of Equations, Inequalities and VICs.

(x)raised to 1/4 + (x)raised to 1/2 =>

If x =17 (which is a positive integer), 4th root of 17 is not an integer and sq root of 17 is also not an integer.

The book talks about x=16 but what happens when it is 17 or 18?

Thanks
Thanu

Hey Thanu,

FYI- we respond to these forum postings in order, so replying to your own question means it gets pushed down on our list. We're always trying to get to your questions as quickly as possible. :)

As for your question, you are right, the answer would be different if the number were 17 or 18, but the directions above the questions say:

For Problems #13-15, given that x is an integer greater than 1, determine whether each of the following expressions can be an integer.

The explanation chooses 16 and 8 since those are numbers that DO work for #14 and 15.
