MGMAT Strategy Guides, 4th Edition vs. 5th Edition

by nuwalt Sat Dec 15, 2012 9:02 pm

Stacey,

I am a previous MGMAT student. I took my GMAT earlier this year and didnt do well. Ofcourse I didnt study or took my classes seriously. Now I am restarting my preparation for a top E-MBA for 2014 application cycle. I want to start early now for the GMAT and allowing 6 months for my next GMAT. If I dont do well, I will still have time for another chance.

Now, I have all GMAT Strategy Guides Edition 4 and access to MGMAT online reosurces for a good one year. Do I ned to re-purchase NEW MGMAT Strategy Guides (Edition 5)? OR Can I go ahead with Edition 4 and use my online resources to prepare? Any difference in new study guides?

Also, what about OG 13? I have OG 12 and I would ask you the same question?

I appreciate your help in advance. Thanks.

4th edition and OG12 are fine in general - but a couple of things.

The CR guide changed substantially so if CR is a weakness, you might want to get the new guide. IR didn't exist before, so you don't have that book at all; again, you might want to consider getting that one. The quant guides were rearranged substantially and some of the material was re-written to make it better / easier to understand; we also wrote lots of new practice problems. The same general material overall, though, is still there. RC and SC didn't change as much.

Depending upon when you took the course, you may be eligible for discounts on the new versions of the books; contact the office to find out (800.576.GMAT or studentservices@manhattangmat.com). FYI - they will be closed Mon and Tue for the holidays.

The real test-writers have been increasing the emphasis on meaning in SC, and on convoluted sentences with long underlines. Examples of these do exist in OG12 but there are more in OG13; if this is an area of weakness, then you might want to get OG13. Also, OG13 includes access to an online Q bank of 50 IR questions - didn't exist in OG12. Again, if you want access to these, then you might want to get OG13.
