More Competitive This Year Due to Economy

by Concerned IBanker Thu Mar 20, 2008 11:54 am

I was wondering if this year is the right year to apply. With the thousands of job layoffs I would assume a lot more people are looking to jump into to b-school and ride out the wave.

Do you think there will be a significant increase in applicants this year?
Will it make a big difference to wait another year and apply next fall?

I was pretty set on applying this year, but have recently started to think otherwise. I want to get into a top 10 program, but with my i-banking background I figure it will be harder to differentiate myself.

To be honest, if we are in a bona fide recession (some folks don't think so...), then the job market will be even worse in 1.5 - 2 years, which will mean that the year after will be even more competitive than this upcoming year.

Keep in mind that job markets are sticky - they lag the economy, so this upcoming year we're only seeing the beginning of the job market slowdown.

In any case, apply when you're ready. You can't really time the market - no one will really know in advance. If you're ready this year, go for it. If you want to wait a year, that's fine as well. Either way, you're just going to have to do what you need to do to get in.
