Need help to improve my verbal section

by DungL435 Fri Dec 05, 2014 8:48 pm

Hi instructors!
I have taken 4 manhattan preptests and I scored 37 or 38 in verbal for each. Here are my accuracy for each sections:
SC: 80%
CR: 64%
RC: 50%
The worst subsections of mine are CR's weaken and inference ( 33%, 55%) and RC's inference & specific detail (28%, 50%). For SC, I think I've figured out how to not make the same mistakes again but for CR and RC, I really don't know how to improve. Please give me some hints or guidance of how to get better on those subsections.
Thank you!

I read somewhere that the GMAT asks the CR questions because they require the kind of reasoning that cannot be performed by a computer. No computer program (yet) can replicate the human mind's ability to solve the CR questions.

So maybe the lesson here is to never approach the CR questions algorithmically.

The test is not scored based upon percentage correct, and that figure may or may not tell you what your weaknesses are, so the first thing to learn is how the scoring actually works and how to interpret the data. :)

First, read these two articles:
https://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/2013 ... lly-tests/
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/2013/ ... -the-gmat/

Think about how what you've been doing does and doesn't match up with that and how you may need to change your approach accordingly.

Then, use the below to analyze your most recent MGMAT CATs (this should take you a minimum of 1 hour):
http://tinyurl.com/analyzeyourcats

Based on all of that, figure out your strengths and weaknesses as well as any ideas you have for what you think you should do. Then come back here and tell us; we'll tell you whether we agree and advise you further. (Note: do share an analysis with us, not just the raw data. Part of getting better is developing your ability to analyze your results - figure out what they mean and what you think you should do about them!)

Also do tell us what study materials you have available!

You can use the below resources to help study for CR and RC, but please don't skip the analysis step above. You may not be as weak in these areas as you think you are (and there may be other areas that are more problematic than you realize).
