Need Suggestion regarding B-Schools

by mehta.ankitjpr Mon Aug 27, 2012 2:50 am

Hi,

Thank you for reviewing my profile. Any advice you have would be much appreciated.

I am 25 yr old from India. I did my B.Tech. in 2010 from IIT BHU with CGPA of (7.24/10 Absolute Scale). I was also the placement coordinator of my college for two years(2008-2010)
Currently I am working in an IT Consulting firm(which was a Start Up when I joined) as a consultant. Company is in Business Process Modelling domain and has grown leaps and bounds in last two years. I have been involved in some very decent projects.

I am planning for MBA-2014 batch. As a short term goal I want join a consulting firm. In long run I want to go for entrepreneurship. I will be taking my GMAT on 3rd September. In practice test I have been getting scores in the range of 710-750.

Kindly suggest me some business school matching my profile and goals. Also please note that My budget is not very high and my first preference would be 1 year courses.

Regards,

Ankit

Hi Ankit,

Thank you for submitting your profile. Sounds like your academic record is pretty strong, and your professional career has been quite dynamic as well by virtue of working in a BPM consulting start-up. Sounds like you're in a technical role right now and are looking to use the MBA to switch over to the consulting side of things.

The thing that is missing from your profile right now is extracurricular and community work. Luckily, you still have a year to build up this area of your profile. I suggest you take on some community leadership/volunteer activities, as well as extracurriculars.

As for target programs, there are many options for general management programs. It really depends what you are looking for in a school in terms of fit. Given your interest in entrepreneurship, you may consider west coast schools like UC Berkeley (this would probably be a reach school given the lack of community/extracurricular activities), UCLA. You could also consider Babson, which has a very strong entrepreneurship program. These are all two year programs, though. If you are more interested on one year options, you might consider INSEAD. Other options that are on the more affordable side in the U.S. would be Emory, Pittsburgh, USC -- this last one might be a great option given that it's on the west coast and will put you close to a lot of entrepreneurs and also offers a one year option.

Hope this helps!
Mili

Hi Mili,

Thanks for the reply.

I want to give a try for 2013 batch. Also, I was associated with an NGO working on Rain Water Harvesting.

Also, I am looking for a B-School with a global rank within 50. Kindly suggest me some b-schools where I have some realistic chance to get in.

Hi Ankit,

Most of the programs I suggested are within the top 50. I suggest you do more research and decide which schools are going to be strong fits against your criteria. I really think USC would be a great choice for you.

If you're applying this year, then you won't have time to build up your extracurricular/community experience. If you have leadership stories from working with the NGO, great. If not, explore your personal life experiences and see if there are stories that show who you are, that demonstrate your character, passions, leadership capability, etc. This will help make up for lack of strong extracurriculars.

Best,
Mili

Hi Mili,

Thanks for the reply.

Will my experience as 'placement coordinator' of my college would serve the purpose extracurricular. I can demonstrate my leadership quality during that stint.

Also are there any programs in Europe and Asia that fit my profile.

Hi Ankit,

Yes it will help demonstrate leadership, but you don't want to rely too heavily on your college experiences (it's ok to use one or two if that's the best you have, though!).

You could look at LBS (two year) maybe INSEAD (considering that you want a one year program). Here is a list of other international one year programs you could consider: http://www.forbes.com/sites/specialfeat ... -programs/

Good luck,
Mili

Hi Mili,

I took my GMAT today and got 680(Q50,V31). This score is way below my expectations. My score in practice tests were as follows:
MGMAT 1: 710
MGMAT 1: 690
MGMAT 1: 710
MGMAT 1: 730
MGMAT 1: 710
MGMAT 1: 770(Got some repeated questions)
GMAT Prep1: 750(40V,50Q)
GMAT Prep2:750(40V,51Q)

To take the next chance I will have to wait for a month. I might not be able to apply for 1st deadline. Should I go for a re exam.

Hi Ankit,

It depends which schools you are targeting. For top tier programs it would be worth retaking the exam, but for lower tier ones, you could be ok with a 680. Coming from an overrepresented demographic, it could help your chances to apply earlier, but if you really feel you can greatly improve your score by retaking the exam, I'd say go for it.

Best of luck,
Mili
