Neither First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt nor Secretary of Labor

by gauravtyagigmat Thu Jan 23, 2014 6:20 am

Neither First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt nor Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins sought recognition by the press, and both cautiously allowed others of the Roosevelt brain trust to take credit for the genesis of historic programs in public employment, relief, and social security that were in large
measure what they had been responsible for
.
A. to take credit for the genesis of historic programs in public employment, relief, and social
security that were in large measure what they had been responsible for
B. to take credit for the genesis of historic programs in public employment, relief, and social
security for which the two women were in large measure responsible
C. taking credit for the genesis of historic programs in public employment, relief, and social security
for which the two women were in large measure responsible
D. taking credit for the genesis of historic programs in public employment, relief, and social security
that were in large measure what they were responsible for
E. taking credit for the genesis of historic programs in public employment, relief, and social security
which were largely their responsibility

OA B

though i new in option c,d,e taking is incorrect

so it boils down to A and B
But actualy i was not able to understand the exact meaning of scentence specialy following line "that were in large
measure what they had been responsible for"

and i also dont understand why B is correct.

Please guide me if during exam i am not able to understand the meaning of sentence then what should i do to answer that question correctly or how should i approach to that question

Please read (and follow!) the forum guidelines before posting.

This folder is only for general strategy questions, not content or specific test problems. Check out the content / problem folders and post in the relevant folder depending upon the source of the problem you want to post (and make sure to follow the rules about banned sources).

If you are a course student, you can also ask about other problems or issues before or after class or during section.

If you are not in one of our classes, and the problem is from one of the banned sources, then you can ask about it on another forum (I recommend Beat the GMAT).

I am sorry stacey for not putting my words correctly. The question i quoted is just to gave example that how sometime i am not able to understand the meaning of the sentence then how should i handle such situation during exam .
I felt my question is general not specfic thats why i posted here.
I have SC sentence correction guide and guide for reading comprehension and i have read them completly but manytimes i just not able to understand the meaning.

Even in reading comprehension the technique of notes making does not works for me.I always end up consuming more time in reading comprehension with note making technique.

Please help me in this regard.I want to score 720+ in gmat. These questions are killing me from long time but i was not able to answers about them.

If manhattan rules want me to join your course before you could answer my question. Please tell me which course should i join so that you can answer my question

Please help

Ah, I see - I didn't read fully through your post. Next time, put your concerns / issues first, and then say "for example..." We'll typically see the question first and then just immediately tell you to post in a different folder. :)

If you read the original sentence and have no idea what it's saying, then try to strip the sentence down to just its core: the subjects and verbs. (This will take practice; resources are below.)

If that doesn't work, then substitute a different answer choice and see whether that helps you to understand the sentence. I usually choose either answer B or answer E - and I'm looking for a choice that's decently different than A so that it hopefully makes a big difference when trying to understand it.

If, at that point, you still don't know what they're talking about, guess and move on.

First, read this:
https://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/inde ... em-part-1/

Then, read this and start learning how to handle these more complex sentences:
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... orrection/

As you're learning this, if you have specific questions, come on back to the forums - but those questions should go in one of the verbal folders. If you have more questions about the overall strategy, post in the General Verbal folder. If you want to discuss a specific problem, post in the folder for that source.

Please also note that, whenever you post a problem in any folders other than the MPREP or GMATPrep folders, you have to cite the source.
