Nitrogen triiodide is a highly explosive chemical that is ea

by AsadA969 Fri Sep 23, 2016 3:00 pm

Nitrogen triiodide is a highly explosive chemical that is easy to make from only two ingredients: ammonia and concentrated iodine. However, no terrorists are known to have ever used nitrogen triiodide in an attack.

Which of the following, if true, is the most likely explanation for the discrepancy described above?

(A) Ammonia can be bought in a grocery store, but concentrated iodine must be obtained from somewhat more restricted sources, such as chemical supply houses.
(B) Nitrogen triiodide is only one of several powerful explosives that can be made from ammonia.
(C) Many terrorists have been more focused on acquiring weapons of mass destruction, such as nuclear or biological weapons, than on developing conventional chemical explosives.
(D) Airport security devices are typically calibrated to detect nitrogen compounds, such as ammonia and ammonium compounds.
(E) Nitrogen triiodide is extremely shock sensitive and can detonate as a result of even slight movement.
The correct answer is E.
Hi Ron,
Can we eliminate option B for using extreme word 'only'?
In C, if the words 'many' is converted to the word 'all', then is there any chance to be fit for correct answer? if not, can you explain the reason, please?
Thanks...

hello,
MPrep problems have answer keys. please do not ask "What's wrong with this answer choice?" in general—for this, please consult the answer key.

if you've read the answer key and still don't understand a particular answer option, please ask specific questions about that option (citing appropriate parts of the answer key, if necessary).

thank you.

it seems you're asking whether you can eliminate this answer choice JUST because the word "only" IS IN IT -- i.e., without even having to think about what the answer choice actually says, or about how it relates to the content of the passage.

...if that's what you are asking, then, no. there's no way to avoid having to THINK (and REASON CRITICALLY about how the choices relate to the passage -- hence the name of this section).

In C, if the words 'many' is converted to the word 'all', then is there any chance to be fit for correct answer?

do not attempt to "edit" GMAC's answer options.
