Number Line Positive CAT 2 / Is the number X positive ?

by TahmazR14 Fri Jul 22, 2016 6:48 am

Is the number x positive?

(1) On the number line, 0 is closer to x – 1 than to x.
(2) On the number line, 0 is closer to x than to x + 1.

I tried this question by testing cases. I found that both statements are sufficient, thefore, chose answer "D". But Acoording to the explanation answer is "A"

Since both MGMAT and I agree that Statement (1) is sufficient, I will give the reason why I think statement (2) is also sufficient

If choose 3 for x then x+1 is 4. This satisfies statement (2) and answer to the question is YES

If we choose -3 for x, then x+1 is -2. This means x+1 is closer to zero than x. In other words choosing -3 for x is impossible, because statement (2) is not satisfied.

We can't choose negative numbers for x, Therefore answer is always yes, sufficient

Ahhh

If we give -1/3, then x is negative and satisfies statement (2) so statement (2) is insufficient. Now I see
