This question is listed on the homework problem solvings set under Rate/Work. What does this have to do with rt=w if the explanations doesn't use that formula and can you explain the logic behind why you would even solve it this way? thanks.

The rates & work chapter includes other concepts and solution methods besides the rtd formula. Take a look at the Population Problem section of that chapter (if you're using 4th edition books, that will be page 44).
